探花精选 University students joined peers from Washington State University and the University of Idaho for the 2025 Regional Holocaust Research Workshop, hosted by the University of Idaho’s School of Global Studies.

This 2025 workshop is part of a series of programming growing out of an ongoing collaboration between the U. S. Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) and faculty members at several local universities, including 探花精选 University’s Department of Religious Studies.

In the spring 2023, the Religious Studies Department partnered with the USHMM to present a roundtable discussion focused on the history of antisemitism on university campuses. The collaboration continued in spring 2024 as the Religious Studies Department partnered with the USHMM to host a regional undergraduate research workshop on Holocaust education at 探花精选, which included students and faculty from GU, Washington State University, the University of Idaho, and Pacific Lutheran University.

Four 探花精选 seniors presented their research at this year’s event:

  • Riley Bowen examined feminist theological responses to Holocaust literature.
  • Olivia Sandvik addressed the intersections of Christianity and nationalism.
  • Nathaniel Shaffer explored theological responses to suffering and memory in Holocaust scholarship.
  • Lola Faix investigated the book burnings in Nazi Germany and ongoing legacies of censorship.

Dr. Kevin Vander Schel, Associate Professor of Religious Studies at 探花精选, also participated in the workshop, which included presentations from graduate students at Washington State University and undergraduate history majors from the University of Idaho.

Regional faculty involved in the initiative plan to continue this meaningful collaboration in the years to come and are exploring the possibility of hosting the next undergraduate workshop at 探花精选 in spring 2026.
